Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan has said that prisons in Kerala are moving away from the earlier image of ‘hell-like’ to model centres of transformation.

The Minister was addressing a passing-out parade of jail warder trainees on the jail premises here on Thursday. The jail reforms undertaken in the State were a success, he said citing the huge public demand for the food products made in jails. Mr. Radhakrishnan said steps were being taken to provide solar power systems for the jails across the State with Central aid.

As many as 70 warders, including 26 women, passed out after undergoing a nine-month course at the regional extension centre of the State Institute of Correctional Administration.

The best shooter award was presented to Sanjay Abraham in the men’s category while Anuja S. Nair received the award in the women’s category. P. Saleem and Nahila Anjukanditharakkal were presented the best indoor activities award in the men’s and women’s section respectively. Satheesh C. was adjudged the best outdoor trainee among men and Mini Thekkeveettil among women. The best all-rounder award was received by Rajesh K., while Nishamani received the overall performance award in the women’s category.
