Thrissur: Bhoomika, a centre to assist victims of domestic violence, has been opened at the district hospital here.

An initiative of the State Health Department, Bhoomika, will offer the services of a counsellor or clinical psychologist in addition to medical assistance.

Dr. L.N. Bhagyalakshmi, gynaecologist at the district hospital, said that women reported to the causality with injuries related to domestic violence often refused to reveal the cause of injury.

“They are often intimidated by their spouse. We fail to lend a patient ear because of hectic work,” she said.

The centre will have a social worker as the coordinator or counsellor, who will coordinate the activities of the centre with other departments and agencies. A committee with a woman medical officer, psychiatrist and specialist doctors will manage the functioning of the centre.

P.A. Shameena, coordinator of the centre, noted that even educated women were clueless about handling domestic violence cases.

The centre will also support the victims in seeking legal and police assistance, if necessary.
