Protest is mounting against the reported move to degrade the railway reservation counter here with more and more socio-political groups joining the agitation.

Inaugurating a dharna in front of the collectorate here on Thursday, Jerry Easow Oommen, district president, Kerala Congress, said the move to outsource the railway reservation facility at the district headquarters was akin to cheating the people of the hill district.

He said a similar move to outsource the railway reservation counter was made in Thiruvananthapuram. However, it was dropped following the intervention of the local MP and Union Minister Sashi Tharoor.

Following the MP’s intervention, the officials concerned had even came out with a written statement saying that status quo would continue in Thiruvananthapuram, he said.

Mr. Oommen said the local MP, Anto Antony, should take the initiative to ensure continuation of the status quo in Pathanamthitta as well.

C.J. Sajan, district vice-president, Kerala Congress presided. Benny Parel, Roy Madappally, Shaji Powath, Babu Kallumkal, and C.M.Abraham, all party district office-bearers, spoke.

Move condemned

In separate statements issued here on Thursday, P. Prasad, district secretary, Communist Party of India, and K. Ananthagopan, district secretary, Communist Party of India (Marxist), have condemned the alleged move.

They said the local MP was trying to befool the common people by stating that the District Collector was supposed to ensure the smooth functioning of the railway reservation counter.

The leaders alleged that the move was very much part of the privatisation move in Railways.
