KOCHI: The Association for Environmental Protection at Aluva has welcomed the move to hand over the powers for sand mining from Periyar and Moovattupuzha rivers to the Revenue Department.

In a press release, S. Sitaraman, secretary of the association, said that the move to sell sand through the department is a ‘positive step’.

He suggested that the powers for sand mining should be completely withdrawn from panchayats. Mining should be allowed only on the basis of studies conducted by agencies like the Centre for Earth Science Studies and Centre for Water Resources Development and Management.
