Driving through National Highway 47 between Walayar and Alathur is nothing but a nightmare for motorists. Once a model road, the stretch has fallen into bad days.

The road is so bad with gaping holes dotting the stretch that one would mistake it for a countryside road.

The woes of motorists have been compounded with the onset of the monsoon resulting in a number of accidents between Walayar and Alathur.

The NH has become a `no man's land' of sorts for its caretakers after the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) was formed for the development of national highways in the country.

Though the authority is in force, the repair works are entrusted with the State Public Works Department (PWD). But sources in the PWD said that they are not allotted the required fund and they are only preparing the estimate to take up the urgent repair works. G. PRABHAKARAN
