A 52-year old motorcyclist was killed after he was run over by a bus near Ayarkunnam on Friday.
The inability of the authorities to nab the bus driver resulted in a mass protest by irate local residents.
According to the police, the incident took place around 11.30 a.m. at the Oravackal junction along the Manarcad-Kidangoor road near here.
The deceased has been identified as Philipose P. Kurian alias Manallel Babu, hailing from Paraparambil house in Oravackal.
The overspeeding private bus, in an attempt to overtake another vehicle, had rammed onto the motorcycle from behind. The motorcyclist was thrown onto the road and was crushed under the front tyre of the bus.
Although he was rushed to the Kottayam Medical College, he was declared dead at the hospital.
The bus was headed towards Kottayam from Pala. Fearing public fury, the driver and conductor of the private bus fled the spot.
Irate local residents smashed the windshield and deflated the tyres of the bus. As the agitation gathered strength, the traffic along the route was disrupted for nearly an hour.
Police forces were deployed from the Kottayam (East), Manarcad and Ayarkunnam stations to control the crowd.
The tense situation was defused only after Kottayam Tahsildar Moncy P. Alexander arrived on the scene and assured that all efforts would be made to bring the culprits to book at the earliest.
The police have registered charges of 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 304 A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC against the driver.
