Kozhikode: The district administration has decided to construct 10 public urinals and toilets at various points in the city. The decision was taken at a meeting of the district authorities and representatives of civic, trade and cultural organisations at the Collectorate here on Friday. The works will begin on May 20. The meeting presided by District Collector P.B. Salim approved the plan for the toilet and urinal structures designed by N.M. Salim Associates. Each facility will cost around Rs.6.3 lakh.

Four of the 10 facilities will be built with government fund while the rest will be financed by sponsors. The toilet-complex at Sarovaram Bio-park, Kampuram and Bhatt Road Beaches will be funded by the Tourism Department. Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithy will sponsor the facility at S.M. Street, Moideenpally Road and at the Old Passport Office. Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) will pay for the toilet-complex at the open-air stage at the beach while Oleena women's organisation will fund the facility at the Lion's Park. The Hospital Development Committee will build the one at the Beach Hospital compound while Vyapara Vedi will finance the one at Taj Road.

The district authorities had appointed a committee to report about the bathroom and toilet facilities at major buildings in the city recently. K.S. Jayasree, who led the team, said during the meeting that only 10 of the 36 business centres inspected by the team had usable toilet facilities.
