Missing fishermen return

Ending hours-long nightmare, two fishermen who went missing in the choppy sea off the Kasaba beach here on Sunday reached the Bandar estuary in Mangalore on Monday, reports here said.

Ganeshan, 32, and Shankaran, 36, residents of the beach, managed to land safely at the estuary by afternoon. Relatives and local people, on hearing the news, rushed to Mangalore to receive them.

Vasanthan, a fisherman, who along with the two had set out to the sea from the Kasaba beach, had managed to escape the fury of the sea with the help of local fishermen.

However, the authorities were clueless about the two. A Fisheries Department boat had been requisitioned from Kannur to trace the missing persons on suspicion that they had left towards south, a senior Fisheries Department official here had said on Sunday.

The authorities failed to establish contact with them through their mobile phone, leading to nightmarish hours for their relatives and friends even as a search for the missing persons continued till 11 a.m. when the report of their returning safe ashore reached here.
