KOCHI: Minister for Agriculture Mullakara Ratnakaran has said that there were many difficulties in accepting the demand for a bus terminal at the land owned by the Agriculture Department in Vytilla.

Replying to a submission by K. Babu, MLA, the Minister said a meeting would be convened soon to discuss the issue. He said a coconut nursery has been functioning at the land owned by the Agriculture Department since 1963. An agriculture farm has been functioning there since 1910.

Besides the nursery and the farm, the land also houses the Office of the Agriculture Assistant Executive Engineer, a parasite breeding station and regional agriculture technology training centre.

Mr. Ratnakaran said that Vytilla is an ideal spot for transporting coconut saplings from the Malabar region.

The proposal for a bus terminal in this region was also turned down by the previous governments, he said.

The Minister pointed out that various samithis under the first subject committee of the State Assembly had also recommended that the land owned by the department should not be transferred for other purposes.

He said the Coconut Farm and Nursery Workers’ Union and Kerala Agriculture Technical Staff Association have opposed the proposal to set up the bus terminal at the land.
