KOCHI: Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi has said that in a democratic society no ruler could impose curbs on media freedom, but self regulation and introspection on the part of the media itself was the advisable way forward.

Speaking at a function organised to present former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) G. Madhavan Nair with the P.S. John Endowment Award, instituted by the Ernakulam Press Club here on Saturday, Mr. Ravi said that it was encouraging that the electronic media also was coming around to the idea of self regulation.

The Minister said that whether intolerant response towards media criticism was the correct approach to be adopted by the political community needed serious discussion in the public domain. He said that since the political leaders had the right to deny what was being written about them, attacking the media personnel using intolerant, threatening and abusive language could not be accepted.
