Rahul Baldota, executive director of MSPL, a mining firm of the Hospet-based Baldota group, on Wednesday said he was not aware that the Kerala Cabinet cancelled the permission granted to his firm for mining iron ore from Chakkittapara in Kozhikode district.

“There has been so far no communication from the Kerala government and, therefore, I cannot comment offhand. On getting the details of the Cabinet decision, we will once again approach the Kerala government to reconsider its decision,” Mr. Baldota said, when contacted by The Hindu. Mr. Baldota made it clear that his company had been granted mining lease by the Union government and the State government had to give permission for carrying out a survey before preparing a mining plan.

Survey essential

The survey of the mining area was essential to prepare the mining plan and only after that applications had to be moved before the Ministry of Environment and Forests for obtaining clearances.

Mr. Baldota made it clear that the mining area granted to his company did not come under ecologically sensitive areas.
