KOCHI: The Kerala State General Insurance Employees’ Union has demanded merging of various public sector insurance companies to form a single corporation.

Union State president K. Ajayan said the union was opposed to the increase of Foreign Direct Investment cap in the insurance sector.

The government should desist from the move, considering the global economic crisis, he said. The government should also take steps to fill the vacancies of Class III and Class IV employees in the public sector insurance companies.

At present, there are 16,000 vacancies in various companies, he said.

The union has taken out a campaign rally from Kasaragode to Thiruvanathapuram highlighting these demands. The rally, which toured the district on Monday, will conclude in Thiruvananthapuram on October 23, he said.

Union leaders P.R. Sasi and M. Rajeev were also present at the press conference.
