It is not common for a film's hero to be told that the movie may never reach the theatres. Yet, this multi-layered logic of debutante director Madhav Ramadasan is what caught the fancy of actor Suresh Gopi. The film in question wasMelvilasomwhich also saw Soorya Krishnamoorthy's debut as a script writer.
At a press conference here on Saturday, the lead actor of ‘Melvilasom' pointed out that the boldness shown by the director and the film's producers Mohammed Salim and M. Rajendran in deciding that this film would not be judged by the usual parameters that determine a ‘successful' cinema captivated him.
Only at the time of dubbing did it become sure that the film would reach the theatres after all. The multi-cam method of shooting ensured that no expression of an actor was lost or went unrecorded, Mr. Gopi added. Mr. Krishnamoorthy said Mr. Gopi had stopped eating rice and rice-based food for three weeks to get the physique of an Army officer.
It is now clear that the film is an artistic success. It was made with great financial difficulty. There was no money even to give newspaper advertisements on the day of the movie's release, Mr. Krishnamoorthy said.
Actor Ashokan said there was a time when the entire cast wondered whether the film would be released at all. “This is a completely different cinema. The film's editor K. Sreenivas was also present on the occasion.
