Kochi: The Indian Libre User Group (I-LUG), Kochi chapter, met here on Sunday to draw up plans to convert the State into a centre for free software.

“We have identified certain core sectors such as education, corporate community and the media, to start with. There is also a need to reach out to vendors of free software hardware, primarily to sensitise them on the various aspects of free software-compatible hardware. In fact, dialogue on these has been happening for sometime through our mailing list,” said an I-LUG member.

There was a discussion on free software licenses and open source software, as is customary. The priority topic for the community, development of a ‘Community-based Curriculum and Text Books’, somewhat bore fruit with the I-LUG charting out its action plan, agreeing to post it on www.communitybasedcurriculum.wikia.com. As the meeting took place on the eve of the Swathanthra Software Sangamam (free software meet) at VHSS, Irimpanam, a session was earmarked for discussing the highlights of the meet. The technical session, this time around, dwelt on package management on GNU/Linux. “With a vast variety of free software available, package management gains importance,” said Kevin Sha, who presented the topic.
