Kochi: The Indian Libre User Group (I-LUG), Kochi chapter, met here on Sunday to draw up plans to convert the State into a centre for free software.

“We have identified certain core sectors such as education, corporate community and the media, to start with. There is also a need to reach out to vendors of free software hardware, primarily to sensitise them on the various aspects of free software-compatible hardware. In fact, dialogue on these has been happening for sometime through our mailing list,” said an I-LUG member.

There was a discussion on free software licenses and open source software, as is customary. The priority topic for the community, development of a ‘Community-based Curriculum and Text Books’, somewhat bore fruit with the I-LUG charting out its action plan, agreeing to post it on As the meeting took place on the eve of the Swathanthra Software Sangamam (free software meet) at VHSS, Irimpanam, a session was earmarked for discussing the highlights of the meet. The technical session, this time around, dwelt on package management on GNU/Linux. “With a vast variety of free software available, package management gains importance,” said Kevin Sha, who presented the topic.
