Kottayam Collector convenes meet to discuss issue

A meeting held here on Friday reviewed arrangements that have been put in place at the Kottayam Railway Station and surrounding areas for ensuring convenience to travellers during the Sabarimala pilgrimage season.

District Collector Mini Antony, Thiruvananthapuram divisional railway manager Rajesh Agarwal, Additional District Magistrate T.V. Subhash and Kottayam station manager M.T. Saleem were among those who took part in the meeting.

It has been decided to display the latest train schedules at every Information Centre in the district for the benefit of pilgrims, especially those from other States. Jan Ahar Kendras, which provide nutritious and hygienic meals at a nominal rate, will also be launched in the station premises.

Mr. Agarwal informed the meeting that additional Sabarimala special train services through Kottayam would commence shortly.

The assistance of officials of various departments including revenue and motor vehicles department will be sought to coordinate efforts in ensuring proper sanitation, first aid clinical facilities and traffic control.

Additional staff will also be deployed to ensure seamless functioning in various business areas of the station including ticketing, reservation, sanitation, information, controlling crowds, and security of the travellers.

The district administration has already established a bus parking bay, information booth, pre-paid counter and a police aid post adjacent to the pilgrim shelter which has also been launched with all necessary amenities including toilet facilities.

It has also been announced that there would be round-the-clock bus services from the railway station towards Pampa during the pilgrimage season. Parking facilities for KSRTC buses and other vehicles will also be arranged at Nagampadom in order to prevent traffic congestion in the locality of the railway station.

Meanwhile, an information and pre-paid taxi counter was launched at the railway station on Friday. A telephone directory was also launched by the district administration, according to official sources.
