A two-day international colloquium on challenges in marine mammal conservation and research in the Indian Ocean will begin at the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Kochi, on August 26.

The colloquium is being organised by the Marine Biological Association of India. The conference comes in the birth centenary year of the S. Jones, the founder president of the association. Experts from Sri Lanka, Mauritius and United Arab Emirates will attend. The conference will assess the status of research on marine mammals in the Indian Ocean, identify research gaps and suggest advanced research for proper understanding and its conservation.

The Dr. S. Jones Centenary Award for the eminent marine biologist will be presented to B. Madhusoodana Kurup, Vice Chancellor of Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences. The award, which carries a medallion, certificate, citation and a cash prize of Rs. 25,000, will be presented during the session. Details may be had on ph: 94953 17931, a communication says.
