Supply of 3 mld will begin tomorrow

The Kerala Water Authority will supply 3 million litres of water a day from the Japan International Cooperation Agency-aided Meenad water supply scheme to Kollam city. The step will considerably reduce the pressure on the shrinking Sasthamcotta freshwater lake.

A tank of the KWA at Pazhayattinkuzhi on the outskirts of the city has been cleared to store the water drawn from the Meenad project. The supply of this water to Kollam city will commence on Sunday. Due to technical problems, the Meenad scheme is unable to cover its entire beneficiary area and the water has been lying unused.

There were protests from the beneficiary areas against siphoning away the water to Kollam city. However the KWA authorities have solved the issue through consultations.
