KOZHIKODE: House surgeons and post-graduate students struck work at the Medical College Hospital here on Saturday in protest against the alleged attack on Raghu, a PG student, last night at the casualty wing of the hospital. The house surgeons and PG students called for a 24-hour strike ending 8 a.m. on Sunday.
According to sources at the MCH, Dr. Raghu was allegedly attacked by the bystanders of a patient who was injured in an accident at Kotooly in the city. The delay in getting medical aid reportedly irked those accompanying the patient.
The doctors on duty, meanwhile, alleged that if the door of the casualty wing had not been closed, they would have been subjected to more serious attack. The police registered a case and an inquiry is on.
A conciliation meeting was held with the representatives of the striking doctors in the chamber of Principal V. Geeta on Saturday. The demands made included setting up of a police aid post at the casualty wing and action against the culprits. MCH superintendent K.V. Rajendran, Institute of Maternal and Child Health Superintendent Mohan Kumar and Circle Inspector of Medical College Police Station were present at the meeting.
MCH sources said that at least three attacks on doctors had occurred at the hospital in the last two months. In one case, a woman house surgeon was attacked and in another a staff nurse was subject to attack. Reportedly no action had been taken in both the cases.
