Finance Minister KM Mani has advocated self-regulation as an effective antidote to the “negative aspects now seen in the media.”

Inaugurating the convocation ceremony at the Institute of Communication and Journalism at Kozhikode Press Club on Monday, Mr. Mani said while none would dispute the need for journalists to be independent and fearless in their writings, it was also necessary for mediapersons to be socially committed and keep interests of society above everything else.

“Mediapersons should also be self-critical and show restraint,” Mr. Mani said. Criticism of media, when it pursued sensationalism with the sole objective of boosting circulation or viewership, was only natural.
