Minister for Welfare of Scheduled and Backward Communities A.K. Balan has announced the Dr.Ambedkar Media Awards for 2010.

Mr.Balan and Kerala Press Academy chairman S.R. Sakthidharan told the media here on Thursday that separate awards were being given for features published in print, television and radio which highlighted the life and development of the Scheduled Castes and tribes in the State.

Features published between August 16, 2009, and August 15, 2010, had been considered for the award.

Of the eight entries in the print category, the series Aarukakkum Ini Oorukal on the tribes in Attapady written by K.D.Abraham, sub-editor, Mathrubhumi, won the award for the best feature. The award comprises Rs.30,000 and citation.

V. Shamna of Indiavision won the award in the visual media.

The story on the Cholanaikkar community, which is facing extinction, won her the award comprising Rs.20,000 and citation.

The winners were selected by a jury headed by Mr. Sakthidharan.

The awards will be presented at a function at the VJT Hall on November 13.
