KANNUR: Election to the Mattannur municipality will be held on September 5. State Election Commissioner P. Kamalkutty said on Friday that the election would be notified and nomination papers accepted from August 1.
August 8 would be the last date for filing of nominations and scrutiny would be on August 9. Nominations could be withdrawn till August 13. The model code of conduct would be in force from today, Mr. Kamalkutty said.
He said the term of the present council would end on September 12. So the new council would have to be constituted on September 11. Counting of votes would be held on September 7.
The Commissioner said the number of wards in the municipality rose to thirty-one from twenty-eight.
Voters’ list was prepared on the basis of the redrawn wards, Mr. Kamalkutty said. In the final list, there were 30,627 voters. Twelve are reserved wards. Eleven are for women and one for scheduled caste. The post of municipal chairperson is also reserved for women, Mr. Kamalkutty said. He said electronic voting machines (EVM) would be used. Apart from electoral photo identity cards, voters could also use ration cards, passports, driving licence and bank/post office passbooks.
Mr. Kamalkutty said arrangements for the poll were in place. Divisional Forest Officer P. Sreedharan and Social Forestry Assistant Conservator O. Jayaraj were appointed Returning Officers for wards one to sixteen and wards seventeen to thirty-one respectively.
Mr. Kamalkutty said a steering committee headed by District Collector Ishita Roy would be formed soon to ensure that the model code of conduct was adhered to.
Instructions were also given to identify sensitive booths in the municipality. The Director General of Police would be asked to provide adequate police personnel, he said.
