The State government has chalked out marketing strategies to develop tourism spots in a big way by giving thrust to infrastructure development, Home and Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said here on Saturday.
Mr. Balakrishnan was speaking at a function to inaugurate the work on 30 cottages being built by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) Hotels and Resorts Ltd. on the Bekal beach.
He said the Tourism Department was executing projects estimated at Rs.600 crore during the financial year 2010-11, as the sector was poised for all-round growth with more tourists, both foreign and domestic, opting for Kerala as their preferred destination.
The government had initiated steps to identify land to set up an airstrip near Periye to operate small aircraft for tourists arriving at Bekal. The department had accorded priority for widening roads to the Bekal Fort from the proposed Kannur airport, whose construction would start this year.
He said the government wanted public-sector units such as the KTDC to have more stakes in developing tourist destinations by associating with private players. The corporation was projected to post a profit of Rs.300 crore this year, up from the Rs.240 crore last year.
The Minister agreed to set up a government guest house on the Bekal beach if the authorities identified an acre of land for the building.
K.V. Kunhiraman, Uduma MLA, presided. KTDC Chairman Cheriyan Philip was present.
