Hamza Kallenthodan, 27, from Karulai here died on Monday possibly due to a bullet injury he sustained at 10.30 p.m. on Sunday.

The police said he was part of a gun-wielding hunting team which ventured into the forests in the Karulai range, Nilambur. His gun would have gone off while trying to club to death a porcupine using the butt of the weapon, the police said.

The other members of the gang carried Hamza for over seven km to reach the Nilambur taluk hospital by 2.30 a.m. Doctors said he had died a couple of hours before reaching the hospital. The police arrested four members of the gang and recovered a gun from the spot, six km away from the Nedunkayam forest station.

The Police and the Forest departments registered separate cases.
