Thiruvananthapuram: The charred body of a 58-year-old man was found in a shed adjacent to a retail outlet of the Kerala State Beverages Corporation (KSBC) at Sreekaryam on Tuesday.

The police identified the deceased as Retnakaran Pillai, a night watchman working for a company which provides security guards for the corporation’s retail outlets and its bonded warehouses in the district.

The police suspect Retnakaran Pillai was charred to death when a fire broke out in the shed in which employees of the outlet store empty cardboard-made liquor bottle cartons meant for disposal. Fire and Rescue Services officials said the fire would have broken out around 5 a.m.

They said the fire could have spread from a mosquito coil used by the guard.
