The Neyyatinkara police have arrested a man in connection with the murder of his friend’s wife at Pozhiyoor in February 2012.

Dy.SP Y.R. Rustam identified the accused as Babu, 42, a manual labourer. He said the suspect had abetted and aided the murder of his friend Anil’s wife Soumya, 20. Anil has already been arrested.

Soumya, a resident of Malappuram, had married Anil against the wishes of her family in 2011. On February 12, her husband, Anil, and Babu rushed her to a nearby hospital in an unconscious state. The doctor pronounced her dead and informed the police.

The police arrested Anil on the charge of strangulating Soumya and attempting to portray her murder as a case of suicide. The police said that they learned that Anil was in the habit of starving his wife for days and beating her when she tried to scrounge food from neighbours. She confided in Babu that she wanted to go home. The police said Babu, in turn, told his friend that she was in love with a man in her native place and was planning to elope with him.

A re-investigation, establishing Babu’s presence at the scene of crime, resulted in his arrest, the police said.
