: Noted linguist and translator Ronald E. Asher said here on Friday that Malayalam literature had grown to the level of world literature, especially with translations.
He was interacting with Malayalam language lovers at the University of Calicut.
Ronald E. Asher, widely known as the global ambassador of Malayalam language in view of his translation of the works of Vaikom Mohammed Basheer and Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai into English, was accorded a warm reception at the university.
He said the works of Basheer and Thakazhi posed a challenge to the translator by being unparalleled in style and content.
Dr. Asher described their works as the quintessence of Kerala life and Malayalam language. Vice-Chancellor M. Abdul Salam presided over the function held under the banner of the Vaikom Mohammed Basheer Chair.
Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam University Vice-Chancellor K. Jayakumar introduced Dr. Asher.
M.M. Basheer, Anil Vallathol, D. Ravisankar and M.N. Karassery were among those who attended the function.
