KOLLAM: The Malayalam computing programme through the Akshaya project in the district will be launched on October 15.

Minister for Local Self-government Paloli Mohammed Kutty will inaugurate the programme at Bharanikavu near here.

District panchayat president K. Somaprasad said that Kollam was one of three districts chosen for the first phase implementation of the programme. With this, computer users can send e-mails and chat in Malayalam.

The Unicode system will be used for the purpose, Reju Tom Lal, additional district coordinator of the Akshaya project, said.

District Collector A. Shajahan said that the Akshaya project had shown outstanding results in the district. At present there are 140 such centres in Kollam, covering all local bodies.

These comprise 94 e-payment centres. The monthly collection from these centres was Rs.19 lakh, he said.

Electricity, telephone and water bills can now be paid at the e-payment centres. From next month, arrangements would be made for facility paying commercial taxes online, he said.

E-railway ticketing facility will be operational from thirty-nine Akshaya centres in thirty-five grama panchayats of the district, he added.
