PALAKKAD: The Malampuzha dam, biggest irrigation dam in the State, was opened for the first time in August in the last 11 years on Wednesday.

Four shutters of the dam were opened one inch to avoid flow of water over the shutters. The water level of the dam rose to 114.89 metres on Wednesday. The level last year during this period was 114.38 metres. The capacity of the dam is 115.06 metres (375.15 ft). It generally gets filled during the north west monsoon only.

Executive Engineer of the Malampuzha Irrigation Division M.O. Joy said that the dam got filled early this year due to heavy rain in catchment areas due to the south west monsoon. "If the inflow continues like this, the dam shutters will be kept open during Onam when thousands of people will visit the dam and garden, one of the tourism destinations in the State," he said.
