KOCHI: The Ernakulam Range of Excise made a major catch of foreign liquor, suspected to have brought in for the festival season. Eighty-four cartons of foreign liquor, estimated to cost more than Rs. one crore, was brought in a lease wagon attached to Nizamudin-Ernakulam Mangala Express, which arrived at Ernakulam South on Monday morning.

The consignment, which was being taken out of the railway station premises by porters before Excise officials stopped it, contained nearly 1,500 litres in 1800-odd bottles. Some of the bottles were priced Rs. 15,000 and most of the bottles had the labels saying ‘for sale in Kochi only’, said K. Mohanan, Deputy Excise Commissioner. The Department had made a similar catch of 1,400 litres of foreign liquor and arrested two persons last month.
