: A police team headed by circle inspector B. Santhosh on Wednesday arrested Mohammedali Mullah (22) of Thrithala from Govinda Estate, 25 km from Mookambika at Kollur in Karnataka, in connection with the murder of a taxi driver from Thrithala in Palakkad.

Mullah, who had earlier worked in this estate, is the first accused in the case.

The police on questioning Umesh (27), who was arrested earlier in connection with the murder of taxi driver, Raghu alias Kannan (39), got information about Mullah.

The body of Raghu was found under the Thirunellai bridge in Palakkad town last Friday. Two other accused Prasad (33) and Abdul Thaheer (28) are still at large.

The accused called the taxi on a trip from Thrithala to Ootty. On the way, Raghu was brutally murdered by the four-member car lifting gang. The body was thrown into the river from Thirunellai bridge and the accused took the car to Ukkadam in Coimbatore for selling it.

Since they failed to get a buyer, they abandoned the car and returned to their home town Karapotta.

When they came to know that the police were after them, they escaped from the area and Mullah left for Kollur.

The police said that Mullah would be produced in a court on Thursday.
