KOLLAM: Eight locations on the banks of Ashtamudi Lake have been identified for the Union government- supported Ashtamudi Tourism Circuit project.

Tourism Department Director M. Shivashankar inspected the locations on Friday along with District Collector A. Shajahan and District Tourism Promotion Council secretary K. Shirish.

Mr. Shivashankar told The Hindu that the identified locations were the Kollam boat jetty, Sambranikudy, Veerabhadra Swamy Temple, Pattamthuruthu, Munroe Thuruthu, Vallakadavu, Palliyamthuruthu and Kuthiramunambu.

He said that the report on the project will be submitted to the Centre before July 15.

Mr. Shivashankar said the task of preparing the project report had been entrusted to an architect group and was confident that the report could be submitted this month itself.

The project was expected to get the Centre’s approval by December. This will be followed by administrative sanction from the State government.

The Centre’s financial support for the circuit will be Rs.8 crore, Mr. Shivashankar said.

The inspection of the locations was conducted to ensure that problems do not crop up after the project was taken up for implementation. If the inspection team feels that serious hassles are likely at any of the locations, an alternative location would be identified, he said.

The project report was being sent after the ad hoc inspection, as the Tourism Department was keen that the circuit is commissioned at the earliest after obtaining the administrative sanction, he said.
