Literacy programme for migrant workers

: The District Literacy Mission celebrated the 22nd anniversary of Kerala achieving total literacy here on Thursday. The celebrations began with a cultural procession that culminated at the Press Club Maidan for a public meeting. The meeting was also christened ‘Chelakkadan Aisha Umma commemoration’, to the memory of Aisha who was the former ambassador of the Kerala State Literacy Mission.

The cultural procession was flagged off by Mayor Prasanna Earnest and the meeting was inaugurated by district panchayat president S. Jayamohan. Health and Education Standing Committee chairman of the district panchayat S.L. Sajikumar presided. Managing editor of Kerala Shabdam , B.A. Rajakrishnan delivered the literacy message.

The former literacy mission volunteers and beneficiaries were honoured at the function. In his inaugural address, Mr. Jayamohan said the literacy programme for migrant labourers by the District Literacy Mission in their respective mother tongue would be successfully implemented He said the classes in Kannada and Tamil have already commenced.

Sewing machines for the Tsunami Vidya Kendras were distributed at the function. .
