Joint inspection by the Police and Excise Departments will be intensified to check the sale of illicit liquor at festival venues, District Collector Rathan Kelkar has said.

He was addressing a district-level people’s committee meeting here on Friday.

The meeting also decided to check liquor consumption in public places. It was suggested at the meeting that awareness should be created among the public, especially migrant workers, against travelling in public transport vehicles after consuming liquor and pan masala.

As many as 201 abkari cases had been registered by the Excise between February 6 and April 22 this year, Deputy Excise Commissioner P. Jayarajan told the meeting. Nearly 10 narcotic cases had also been booked and 215 people charged in various cases. As much as 695.075 litres of foreign liquor, 44.515 litres of Mahe liquor, 28 litres of arrack, and 18.5 litres of wash had been seized during the period.

Apart from these, 236 people had been arrested by the police in as many as 197 abkari cases.
