The licence of the fire-cracker unit at Panniyamkurissy, near Cherpulasery, where eight people were killed following an explosion on last Saturday, was cancelled by Additional District Magistrate (ADM) K.V. Vasudevan on Monday.

The licence, which was valid up to March 31, 2013, was cancelled as safety lapses were found by the Deputy Chief Controller of Explosives, Kochi, A.D. Tamgage, and the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Northern Range, N. Shankar Reddy, during their visit to the unit on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the owner of the unit K. Mohammed, who was arrested and produced in the Ottapalam court on Sunday, was remanded in judicial custody.
