Every year World Heart Federation(WHF) celebrates the World Heart Day (WHD) on the last Sunday of September. This year it falls on 30th September. World Heart Day concept is a relatively new idea, this year’s world heart day being only the 8th in the series. Each year there will be a new message for the WHD. This year it is
“ Team up for Healthy Hearts” .
What is the aim of World Heart Day (WHD)
Through the theme of the day, the WHF attempts to spread a message related to heart disease to the individual, to the society, to the country and to the world as a whole. Diseases of the blood vessels leading to heart attack and stroke are the leading causes of death in the world. Almost 17.5million people die of these diseases all over the world every year, out of which almost 80% die in the developing and underdeveloped countries of the world.
Responsibility of the
Each individual has a responsibility to himself / herself, to the family, to the society, to the country and to the world as a whole to adopt healthy living habits so that diseases can be prevented and in turn eradicated from the face of the earth. By many preventive measures a number of infectious diseases have already been eradicated from many countries and in some cases even from the earth. Can we do the same with heart attack also? At the moment the answer is difficult. But it is proved beyond doubt that the heart disease can be prevented to a large extend. As individuals we can set examples by cultivating healthy living habits and influence the society one lives in.
How can we “ Team up for Healthy Hearts”
Each individual is part of a society and can influence the thought and deeds of the society by his/her actions. Father or mother can set examples for children. Good healthy habits in a teacher can influence the students. A religious leader can influence his religious community by his words, deeds and examples. Media especially print, cinema and television play a vital role in influencing the society. At every level an individual, irrespective of big or small, can definitely influence the people around him to live healthy lives to have healthy hearts.
What are healthy habits
Healthy habits lead to healthy, active and long life. The following are the most important directions for a healthy life style.
Healthy eating habits: Always take balanced diet which is rich in vitamins, minerals and fiber. Avoid all forms of fried food. Avoid excess salt, sugar and fat in food
Avoid marketed drinks, instead drink fruit juice
Regular exercise : An adult should exercise at least 45 mts every day.
Relaxation: Even the busiest person has to find time to relax.
Summing up: Heart disease is rapidly reaching epidemic proportions among Indians. Heart disease can be prevented by healthy life style. Individuals can set examples in the family, in the society and in the community to inculcate healthy habits. Let us “Team up for Healthy Hearts” so that the heart disease menace can be wiped off from our society.
