The carcass of a leopard was found in a private coffee estate at Malankara near Sulthan Bathery in the district on Thursday morning.
The estate workers found the carcass of the male leopard, aged about six years, and informed the forest officials. The animal was shot dead. Five lead pellets were removed from the animal’s body during autopsy, P. Dhaneshkumar, divisional forest officer, South Wayanad forest division said.
Autopsy reports revealed that bullet injuries on its liver and abdomen were the cause of death, he added.
A case has been registered in connection with the incident. It was reported that poaching had increased considerably in the forests near the coffee estates in the area.
