Left parties boycotted Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien on Friday by staging a walkout in protest against Mr. Kurien presiding over the proceedings of the House when it was debating the Bhandara rape incident in Maharashtra.

Mr. Kurien was in the chair when the discussion started soon after Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde completed his statement on an allegation of phone tapping of Leader of the Opposition in the Upper House Arun Jaitley.

Members of the CPI and the CPI(M) staged the walkout resenting Mr. Kurien being in the chair, though they did not boycott him during the Home Minister’s reply on the phone-tapping issue.

The Left parties had earlier said they would boycott Mr. Kurien in the Upper House till his name was cleared of all charges in the Suryanelli rape case. — PTI
