A march taken out by Left Democratic Youth Federation (LDYF) to the Kanayannur taluk office in protest against the State government's decision to increase age of retirement disrupted traffic along Park Avenue on Thursday morning.

The march started from the CPI(M) local committee office around 11.30 a.m. and the police stopped the protestors ahead of the taluk office. Barricades were set up by the police team led by Sunil Jacob, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Ernakulam.

The protestors sat on dharna on the road following this. M. Anil Kumar, district secretary, DYFI, and T.C. Sanjith, district secretary, AIYF, addressed the gathering. The police fired water cannon as the protestors turned unruly.

A few policemen and mediapersons were also caught in the water spray. Town Central Police arrested some of the LDYF activists and cases were registered against 33 of them for disrupting public life. Those arrested were released later.

In a related development, the district unit of the Kerala Union of Working Journalists lodged a complaint with City Police Commissioner M.R. Ajith Kumar that the water cannon damaged some cameras used by mediapersons. K.C. Rajagopal, State president; Manoharan Morayi, State general secretary; and Abdulla Mattanchery, district president, protested against the police action.
