KOLLAM: Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) general secretary M.I. Shanavas has said that the Left Democratic Front (LDF), in view of its opposition to the Smart City deal, should categorically tell the people of the State that it would not sign the deal if it comes to power.

Addressing a press conference along with District Congress Committee president Sooranad Rajashekaran here on Thursday, he said that with Chief Minister Oommen Chandy's announcement that the implementation of the Smart City project will be decided by the voters, the ball was now in the LDF court.

He said that Smart City was a dream project of Kerala and it had the potential to change the face of the State. The CPI(M) opposed it on grounds of petty politics.

With the aim of stalling the project, Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanadan went to the extent of even inflating the price of the land where the project is planned to come up.

Mr. Shanavas said that in previous elections the Communist Party of India (Marxist) had projected the names of K.R. Gouri and Suseela Gopalan as Chief Minister candidates. But when the time came the party ditched both. In the present elections, the CPI(M) campaigns in the Malabar area by projecting the party leader Paloli Mohammed Kutty as its Chief Minister candidate whereas in southern districts it projects Mr. Achuthanandan. Both are bound to be ditched if the LDF comes to power.
