Alleges failure to implement pro-farmer measures

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) district committee has expressed solidarity with the Wayanad district hartal called by farmers organisations on April 3 in protest against the alleged laxity of the State government in implementing pro-farmer measures to curb the agrarian crisis.

Speaking to the media persons here on Friday, K.V. Mohanan, convener, LDF district committee, said that though the United Democratic Front government had announced various pro-farmer measures to tackle the crisis, it was yet to implement any positive measures so far.

As many as 24 farmers had allegedly committed suicide owing to the financial stress following a sharp fall in farm produces since April 2011, he said. The government had failed to implement a moratorium on farm loans effectively, he said.

Though farmers' organisations had urged the government to consider the farmers who were cultivating on lease hold lands as legal farmers, the government was yet to consider it, he said.
