Thiruvananthapuram: The High Court Bench Action Council has decided to go ahead with the hartal and boycott of courts in the district on October 21 to mark the 250th day of the agitation for a High Court Bench in the capital.

A press note here on Tuesday said a meeting of the joint action council would be called at the Thiruvananthapuram Bar Association Hall on Thursday.

Criticising the Left Democratic Front for withdrawing from the hartal, the press note said there were no examinations scheduled for October 21, the reason cited by the ruling front for pulling out. The District Congress Committee flayed the LDF decision to withdraw its call for hartal.

Its president, V.S. Sivakumar, said in a press release here on Tuesday that the biggest impediment to the setting up of the Bench was the lackadaisical attitude of the government.

The Centre was willing to sanction the Bench as soon as the State government sought the approval of the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court.

The Shiv Sena, the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi have announced their support for the hartal.
