Says they seize the land distributed to the landless

Land to be given to all the landless in two years

More than two lakh families are eligible for this

KOLLAM: The State government is enacting a law to ensure that land distributed to the landless does not end up with the land mafia, said Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran.

He was delivering the presidential address at district-level land distribution mela here on Monday.

Mr. Rajendran said that the draft Bill in this connection is under preparation. The government distributes land to the landless with the aim of enabling such persons to build a house of their own and also earn an income through farming.

The law is being enacted since it has come to the notice of the government that the land mafia has set eyes on such land too.

The government intends allocating land to all the landless in two years. This will be done in three phases. In the first, excess land will be taken over.

In the second phase, government land under unauthorised possession will be identified and encroachers, evicted. Land will be distributed under the Tribal Act in the third phase.

More than two lakh landless families have to be given land. They include 68,000 Scheduled Caste families and 19,200 Scheduled Tribe families.

Distribution

The government would distribute farmland to the landless at Munnar, Devikulam and Udumanchola in Idukki district within three months, the Minister said.

Minister for Water Resources N.K. Premachandran inaugurated the function. Minister for Labour P.K. Gurudasan distributed the title deeds.

Minister for Education M.A. Baby gave away possession certificates.

District panchayat president K. Somaprasad distributed the monetary benefits under the National Family Welfare Scheme and Mayor N. Padmalochanan distributed the benefits under the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
