Lacklustre Mahotsavam

A much-discussed topic in Kozhikode at the moment is that the Malabar Mahotsavam, which concluded on Wednesday, lacked its usual lustre this time around.

For a festival which had given an opportunity to the people of Kozhikode, and Malabar, to watch artistes of the highest calibre such as K.J. Yesudas, K.S. Chitra, Zakir Hussain and Anuradha Paudwal perform live, the line-up of artistes for this year's edition was not that exciting. There were huge crowds for shows such as those by Mohammed Aslam and Deepak Dev, but most of the programmes drew lukewarm response from the art lovers of Kozhikode, so much so that the organisers had to make a public announcement during one of the shows that even those who had no passes could sit in the reserved areas.

And this used to be a festival where you usually would not even find space to stand if you failed to reach the venue on time.
