Kozhikode: Gold ornaments worth over Rs.1 lakh were stolen from the Kunjumadom Temple on the Thottipalam road at Kuttiyadi in the early hours of Thursday.

The police said the burglars had also taken away seven sovereigns of gold jewellery and Rs.1,000 in cash from the office attached to the temple. The offering box in front of the temple was damaged and its contents looted. The burglars had tampered with the lock of the door of the office.

Fingerprints

The priests of the temple noticed the theft in the morning. The temple management informed the police about the theft. Fingerprint experts collected samples from the temple and its premises. A case was registered at the Kuttiyadi police station.

Third case in a month

Theft at temples has increased in the district in recent times. This is the third case in the past one month. Burglars decamped with gold and silver ornaments and cash from the Sreekanteswara temple in the city. Thieves broke into the Theruv Maha Ganapathi Temple at Koyilandy a fortnight ago.
