KOTTAYAM: The oarsmen from Kumarakom Boat Club on Payippadan came first in the competitions for chundan grade boats in the 110th edition of Kottayam Boat Race (Thazhathangadi Vallom Kali) held here on Saturday.

In a cliffhanging final, they overtook the oarsmen from Kumarakom Town Boat Club who had competed in the newly-built Ilikkalam Chundan. In the Odi Veypu Grade I category, Kummanm Boat Club took the top position pushing the oarsmen from Velianad Boat Club on Vengazhi boat to second position.

In the Iruttukuthi Grade I category, Thuruthithara of Eera boat Club came first while in Churulan grade one, it was Velangadan and Kodimatha boats who took the first and second positions, respectively. In Churulan Grade II, category, Sree Guruvayoorappan and jalaran took the first and second positions.

The race was declared open by Agriculture Minister Mullakkara Ratnakaran. Speaking on the occasion, he pointed out that the regatta was one of the unique contributions of the State to the world of culture.
