KOCHI: A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Friday directed the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) to file a detailed statement regarding the actual damage caused to its buses and bus stations during the four hartals in 2008.

The Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice J.B. Koshy and Justice V. Giri passed the order on a writ petition seeking a directive to the State government to compensate the KSRTC the loss of Rs.8.21 crore incurred during the hartals and to recover the amount from the organisations that called the hartals.

The State government had earlier said that it was not possible for it to recover the amount from any person because the amount could not be considered as actual damage caused to the KSRTC.

The KSRTC in its statement had said that the loss pointed out by the petitioner was correct.

Appeal filed

Justice V.K. Mohanan adjourned to Monday the hearing on an appeal filed against the Kottayam special court judge’s verdict sentencing first accused Renjith Varghese and second accused S. Sherin to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment and imposing of a fine of Rs.20,000 each on them in a case relating to ragging of a girl student at the School of Medical Education in Kottayam.

The third accused, Sheffeeq Yusuf, was sentenced to three years’ rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs.5,000 imposed on him.
