K.P. Udayabhanu dead

K.P. Udayabhanu, musician, died in his residence here at 8.30 p.m. on Sunday. He was 78.

He is survived by his son, Rajeev Udayabhanu. His wife, Vijayalakshmi, died in 2007.

Mr. Udayabhanu, who was one of the senior-most playback singers in the Malayalam film industry, was born on June 6, 1936, at Tharoor in Palakkad district to N.S. Varma and Ammu Nethyaramma. He was the nephew of K.P. Kesava Menon, freedom fighter and founder Chief Editor of Mathrubhumi . He had won several awards, including the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award in 1987 and Padma Shri in 2009.
