Kozhikode school wins Young World quiz

Rani school and Chinmaya school bag next two slots; 200-odd teams take part

Anjali S. Kumar of class 9 and Abhirami Girish of class 7 of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan School, Perumthiruthi, won the regional finals of The Hindu Young World Quiz at Tagore Centenary Hall here on Thursday.

The second prize was won by P. Malavika and Sidharth V. of class 9 of Rani Public School, Vadakara. Ajay S. Dinesh and Sidharth V. Raj of class 9 of Chinmaya School, Kannur, came third.

The top six teams had to contend with more than 200 teams from Kozhikode, Malappuram, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod, to earn their place in the regional finals. Historian M.G.S. Narayanan complimented the students on their creditable performances.

“Such quizzes are a test of your memory power as well as interest in various subjects. The children of this generation have a greater access to knowledge in any field. So, they should aim to perform better,” said Mr. Narayanan.

He later presented the regional winner’s trophies and certificates from The Hindu , a cash prize of Rs.12,000 and gifts from various sponsors. The first runner-up received a cash prize of Rs.8,000 and the second runner-up, Rs.6,000 as well as trophies and certificates.

The regional winners of the 16 centres will compete in the finals to be held in Chennai on December 7. The Hindu will bear their travel and accommodation expenses, including that of one parent or guardian per team. The winners of the finals will receive Rs.50,000, while the runner-up will get Rs.40,000. The team which comes third will get Rs.30,000.

There will be an online quiz presented by Britannia Milk Bikis Future Minds for students from classes 4 to 9. The prizes for the online quiz will be Apple iPads and HCL tablet. Log on to www.thehindu.com/ywq to participate. The quiz will be live on the website till November 25.
