The Mangalam dam tourism project will be inaugurated by Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan at the dam, near Vadakkanchery, on January 31.

The organising committee will meet at 10 a.m. on January 14 to finalise the programmes, M. Chandran, MLA, said here on Thursday.

The first phase of the tourism complex had been constructed at a cost of Rs.5 crore. It includes a time office, watchman's cabin, compound wall, felicitation centre, library and inspection bungalow.

Second phase

The second phase will include waterfront development, construction of boat jetty, and view point, landscaping etc. The island in the reservoir will also be developed.

The third phase would incorporate earth filling, greening of the island, construction of retaining wall, fencing etc. It is estimated to cost Rs.87 lakh.

The tourism project had brought about development in the region, Mr. Chandran said.

Work on the Rs.5.3-crore Vadakkanchery-Mudyppallur-Mangalam dam road and Rs.2-crore Vadakkanchery-Nariyamangalam-Mangalam dam road had been taken up under the tourism project, he said.

The dam stands on Cherukunnapuzha, a tributary of the Mangalam river.
