An initiative to plant mangrove saplings at Pullooppikkadavu in Puzhathi panchayat here began on Saturday under the aegis of the Kerala Initiative to Save Agriculture and Nature (Kisan).
The initiative to plant mangroves near the Pullooppikkadavu bridge was launched in association with the Zoology Department of the Sir Syed College at Taliparamba here as part of the National Environment Awareness Campaign. The programme was inaugurated by K. Abdul Kareem, Director, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kannur. Dr. Kareem said that environment could be protected only through the joint effort of people's representatives, officials, and students.
Cloth carry bags made by Kisan were handed over to students of the college at the function to make them aware of the perils of plastic bags. Kannur municipal standing committee chairman T.O. Mohanan presided. Puzhathi panchayat president C. Radhakrishnan was present.
